Test matches
Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis played excellent innings to help Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by eight wickets with 2.5 overs to spare in the third T20I at Rawalpindi. The match was a consolation win for the visitors who lost the first two games of the three-match series.
Riding on Sahibzada Farhan’s half-century, Pakistan made 168/8 in their 20 overs. Dasun Shanaka claimed three wickets to leave Pakistan at 102/6 but an unbroken partnership of 76 runs between Farhan and Arafat Minhas took the hosts close to their target. Farhan was dismissed in the penultimate over for 76 off 47 balls. He became the first Pakistan batsman to hit 100 T20 sixes in a calendar year.
Sri Lanka openers struggled to make much progress against the Pakistan bowlers. However, Babar Ayub and Saim Ayub put on a 47-run stand inside the powerplay to get the home team off to a good start. However, both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession and the middle order failed to capitalise. With the collapse, the Lankans were soon in trouble and were reduced to 136/6 after 18 overs.
One-day internationals
Pakistan completed a series sweep over Sri Lanka with a comfortable six-wicket win in the third and final ODI at the Pindi Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Openers Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman both made half-centuries to ease the hosts to their target of 215 with 32 balls to spare.
It was a gripping encounter throughout, with the teams going back and forth. Sri Lanka got off to a great start in their chase, thanks to some erratic bowling from Pakistan and positive intent from openers Pathum Nissanka and debutant Kamil Mishara. The pair added 85 for the opening stand, before Charith Asalanka fell to a superb catch at first slip from Babar Azam and the innings crumbled.
Salman Agha then put his team in a strong position with a well-made unbeaten 107 off 87 balls, before Hussain Talat anchored the innings with a reassuring 42 not out. Maheesh Theekshana missed out on a century as he was caught at short third man off a full delivery from Haris Rauf, but the young batsman will take heart in the fact that his side held their nerve in the crunch moments.
Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were kept in check by the Pakistan fast bowlers, led by spinners Naseem Shah and Yamin Shah. They conceded 105 runs in their 18 overs, while Jeffrey Vandersay and fast bowlers Eshan Malinga and Pramod Madushan failed to make any impact. However, Wanindu Hasaranga’s all-round brilliance almost rescued a collapsed batting effort, with his unbeaten 61 helping Sri Lanka to an unlikely total of 220.
Twenty20 internationals
The co-hosts Pakistan and Sri Lanka meet in their final match of the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup at the Pallekele International Stadium in Kandy on Saturday. The teams have met in 29 T20 internationals with the former having a better head-to-head record.
The two teams have also played each other four times in the T20 World Cup, with both sides winning two matches and the other two being drawn. The game is a high-octane encounter between two of the most dangerous sides in T20 cricket.
Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers led the way with a quick fire 84-run opening stand before the bowlers kicked into gear. Spinner Mohammad Imran took three wickets in four overs to restrict Sri Lanka’s innings and put the hosts in a commanding position.
Sloppy fielding from the Sri Lankans allowed Pakistan’s left-hander Maaz Sadaqat to accelerate his run-scoring and he reached 50 off 31 balls with the help of six boundaries and seven sixes. Maheesh Theekshana missed a chance to catch him off a boundary off Binura Fernando while Sineth Jayawardene dropped a simple return catch off the same bowler when he was on 44.
