India vs. Australia 1st T20I
The rain gods certainly had something in store for the first T20I between India and Australia. The match was reduced to 18 overs per side following the initial rain delay, and Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav were on fire for India. They were just two overs away from an unassailable lead when the heavens opened up for a second time. The match was eventually abandoned, with India on 97-1 and in complete control.
The match was a good start to the five-match series and both teams are set to play four more games, so there will be plenty of nail-biting action ahead. It was also a great day for Smriti Mandhana, who scored 67 from just 42 balls to help her team to victory. It was her first series win as India captain and she will be keen to build on this performance in the next game, which is due to take place in just a few days time.
After a few quick runs from India’s top order, the bowlers were brought back into the attack in the seventh over. But it was an eventful over, as Mooney was a fraction of a second away from being run out by the wicketkeeper! Then, Shikha Pandey was hit for three boundaries by Kimmince in the same over.
But that wasn’t the end of the drama, as a misfield off Mooney allowed Alyssa Healy to steal a run. Healy tried to smash the ball over mid-on but was denied a six as she could not get enough elevation on her shot.
Mooney then fell for a golden duck in the next over, as she was caught at long-on by Veda Krishnamurthy off Schutt. The final over of the innings saw India make 152/5, their highest T20I score against Australia. A four and a six off the final ball from Veda helped them to reach their target in just 19 overs. A fantastic comeback from India’s middle-order, who had been in trouble early on. The second T20I takes place in Melbourne on October 31. Watch live coverage on Star Sports 1 HD.
India vs. Australia 2nd T20I
The two best teams in the world in T20I cricket clashed at the MCG. India led the way for most of the contest, but Australia staged a late fightback with some brilliant hitting. It was a fitting final chapter to a riveting series that saw a whole new generation of Indian stars come into their own and show the world what they can do on their day.
Smriti Mandhana’s 67 off 42 balls was the highlight of India’s innings, her first T20I ton as captain and the highest score by any woman in ODI or T20I cricket. She was supported by Harmanpreet Kaur, who hit a few boundaries and looked good for another big total.
In the end, though, it was Australia who clinched victory in style. Xavier Bartlett and Jasprit Bumrah shared the wickets as India collapsed after a bright start. It was the perfect way to finish a game that could have gone either way.
The coin is tossed, and Australia captain Meg Lanning chooses to bat first. She’s right to do so, as they are one of the top-ranked teams in the format.
They begin well with a couple of fours from openers Beth Mooney and Lanning. But a huge six from Anuja Patil off Schutt in the 12th over puts a dampener on things. It’s the first time this season that India have lost a wicket in their opening over.
But they can still recover with plenty of time to spare, and they do so by sharing a pair of crucial wickets. Jasprit Bumrah castles the much-vaunted Matthew Short with a beautiful yorker and then returns to take another in the next over to put the hosts in serious trouble.
Australia’s batting unit is under siege, and the pressure is mounting on them. Jemimah Rodrigues tries to hit one over midwicket but can’t get any elevation. She then tries to play a rash shot off Perry and ends up getting caught at short leg. The wickets of Mooney and Rodrigues put the brakes on Australia’s run-chase, which was starting to gather pace after their quickfire starts.
India vs. Australia 3rd T20I
Smriti Mandhana led from the front to help India take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series with a comfortable win against Australia at Brabourne Stadium on Sunday. It was Mandhana’s first series win as the full-time captain, and she also racked up her highest T20 score. Her 67-ball innings was full of power and finesse, and she took the pressure off the chase with a couple of big hitting boundary strokes late on.
It was a clinical innings by India, who will be looking to clinch the series with a game to spare in Raipur next week. This was the fourth time that India have won a T20I series abroad, and they will be boosted by the return of star all-rounder Jasprit Bumrah after he was rested for the second game.
A few questions still remain, however, such as whether it was the right move to drop Josh Hazlewood, who is set to return for the Ashes later this month. It was certainly a risky move, and the bowlers will be hoping to avoid any injuries in the remaining two games. The omission of left-arm spinner Arshdeep Singh has also raised some eyebrows. He’s a good player, but the Indian management may have been hoping for an improved performance from their seamers in the final game.
India vs. Australia 4th T20I
After a slow start, the Indian batsmen came back strongly to reach a par score of 152. Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Anushka Sharma all fell short of half-centuries, but it was the impressive display from Deepti Chauhan and Niki Goswami that gave India the impetus to complete a comfortable victory.
It is a good win for India, and will give them a lot of confidence going into the Champions Trophy in England later this month. However, there are areas that can be improved upon, especially in the fielding department where they could have been a bit sharper.
Niki Goswami, who was brilliant with the ball in the first game, continued her excellent form and finished unbeaten on 39 off 24 balls. It was her highest T20I score, and she stayed at the crease till the end to ensure India went all out in the run-chase.
After 11 overs, Australia were on 127/3. Healy had a brilliant chance to seal the match for the Aussies in the final over, but she skied the ball over midwicket to hand India a one-point lead. It was her third boundary in the over, putting her on top of the Australia scoring charts with 68 off 46 balls.
But then, a few overs later, Healy was caught at long-on off the first ball of the next over, giving the Indian bowlers a much-needed respite.
Australia’s powerplay was brilliant, with Healy and Mooney putting on an unstoppable partnership of 66 off 25 balls. Healy had a brilliant chance at point to seal the game, but put it on the back foot with her shot to deep midwicket. Then, Mooney slapped a half-volley over Jhulan’s head for four to bring the target within reach.
