The IPL Points Table determines which teams advance to the playoffs at the conclusion of league stage play, with teams in the top four qualifying for IPL final and teams in top two getting another opportunity if they lose their first match.
RCB are currently in an ideal position to qualify, though Shubman Gill-led side must win all remaining matches and improve its net run rate substantially to do so.
IPL Team Standings and Points Table
Indian Premier League matches are always exciting affairs with top teams fighting hard for victory until the very last ball. This has led to some gripping races over time – from Rajasthan Royals, led by Shane Warne, winning the inaugural season (2008), or Kolkata Knight Riders outwitting Chennai Super Kings at Wankhede Stadium in 2014 by overturning their Net Run Rate deficit, to Delhi Capitals narrowly missing out despite their last-ditch charge in 2024. The IPL adopted its playoff system in 2011 and since then, teams that finish top of their points table have advanced directly to the final. Teams finishing second will compete in Eliminator; which has only produced a winner once since its implementation (Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016). Teams finishing third or fourth have the chance for another match up via Qualifier 2.
IPL Points Table
IPL Points Table determines team rankings, playoff qualification and other key elements in the league stage of Indian Premier League based on total points, net run rate (NRR), head-to-head record and tiebreakers. Only teams with four or more highest point totals make it through to playoffs.
Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have an excellent chance of defending their title, while Shubman Gill’s Gujarat Titans and MS Dhoni’s Mumbai Indians should make it back to the final. Meanwhile, teams such as KKR, KXIP, and CSK may see this tournament as a fresh opportunity to turn things around after previous failures.
With the implementation of Eliminator cricket in 2011, placing in the top two has become an essential goal for IPL franchises, as this gives them two chances to reach the final. Since its implementation, teams that finished first or second in points table have made six or eight final appearances respectively.
The 2026 edition of IPL is underway with its playoff race heating up. RCB have taken top spot while GT and SRH remain locked in tight competition for second. Rajasthan Royals currently stand in fourth with an excellent net run rate (+0.783), followed by Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians who both remain unbeaten after 15 matches played so far.
Net Run Rate
NRR (Net Run Rate) in limited overs cricket refers to the difference between a team’s total runs scored and total runs conceded in an innings, and serves as an important metric used by limited-overs league tournaments to rank teams with equal points when ranking them for playoff spots.
NRR (Net Run Rate) is calculated based on the average of how often each team scores and concedes in all matches within a group, and should not be confused with its average NRR in an entire tournament or group, which takes into account how both teams score and concede runs across both tournaments/groups.
NRR can only be applied in matches where an outcome has been reached; in the case of abandonments without clear winners or with Duckworth-Lewis being applied, both teams receive their par scores upon abandonment.
IPL Playoff Qualification and Team Rankings
Now that the league phase has come and gone, we enter playoffs! IPL teams that finish in the top four places qualify for knockout stage playoffs with an opportunity to become champions if they make it past Qualifier 1 while teams finishing third and fourth will compete in an Eliminator matchup.
Rajasthan Royals earned the final spot in the playoffs by beating Mumbai Indians on Sunday and eliminating KKR and Punjab Kings from contention. Ajinkya Rahane’s side finished on 16 points but could increase to 18 if all remaining games are won – their excellent net run rate makes their chances more likely than others in qualifying.
It was an historic day for Sunrisers Hyderabad as they joined an exclusive club of teams to have appeared most frequently in IPL playoffs. Led by Ajinkya Rahane, this team became the eighth IPL franchise to reach playoffs – with an excellent chance at making semifinals by beating Delhi Capitals and hoping RCB or CSK lose all their remaining matches.
RCB are all but certain to make the playoffs, needing only one more victory to ensure they fall into one of the four qualifying slots. Their dominant home record and impressive net run rate will give them an edge against other teams.
