Kane Williamson’s 176 almost exactly measured New Zealand’s first-innings lead before a top order collapse left the Proteas in disarray on day four. That left them with a mountain to climb in their quest for a first Test win in Wellington.
According to the South Africa National Cricket Team Vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Match Scorecard, De Bruyn and Amla were dismissed in a slapstick mix-up, while Southee removed Edward Moore and Matt Henry to prevent the visitors from gaining momentum.

ODIs
The Proteas have won their fifth straight home ODI series against Australia, and are now the only side with a winning record against them. Kane Williamson’s 176 almost exactly measured New Zealand’s first-innings lead, and he set up a potential run chase of 528 to win the game.
But a top-order collapse saw the tourists slump to 459-5 at stumps, and their hopes now depend on the weather. They lost opener Dean Elgar (5), Theunis de Bruyn (12), Hashim Amla (19) and JP Duminy (13) to leave them facing an innings defeat.
South Africa captain Tim Southee decided against enforcing the follow-on, and the hosts consolidated their huge lead with relative ease. Neil Brand and Matt Henry both took two wickets in the first four overs to leave South Africa 62-2 at lunch, still 466 runs behind. But Zubayr Hamza (not out 31) and Raynard van Tonder (26 not out) held the line against searching spin bowling, with a stand of 57 putting them in control.
Keshav Maharaj’s 4/20 was the second-best ODI figure by a South African spinner against Australia, after Boje’s 5/12 in Cape Town in 2002. He took three wickets in the final session to seal victory, and was backed by the rest of the bowling attack. Both the pacers and spinners performed well, with a total of six wickets shared between them. The Proteas also defended a total of only 27 runs, the lowest in an innings in their history against Australia.
Marco Jansen’s brilliant catch to dismiss Renshaw triggered the collapse, and his four catches are the most by a South African batsman in an ODI against Australia. Jansen also shared a 107-run partnership with captain Faf du Plessis to add some stability to the South African innings, and was involved in a 46-minute stand of 12 with Quinton de Kock before being run out in a bizarre slapstick mix-up with Amla.
The pair were playing in a slapstick mix-up because of a miscommunication after de Kock turned down a single off Maharaj. Amla then tried to make a single, only to have his foot slip on the pitch, causing both players to fall over in a bizarre scene.
T20Is
The South African batsmen had an opportunity to turn around the match after a disastrous start but poor shots and disciplined bowling turned the game in New Zealand’s favour. The Black Caps had a 1-0 lead after two days at Seddon Park and it seemed a tough ask to overturn that deficit on a ground where defending a series lead would be easier than overturning it.
New Zealand’s top order were dismissed cheaply, and the Proteas struggled to avoid a follow-on. They lost Dean Elgar (5) and Theunis de Bruyn (12) to a series of misses before Kane Williamson’s brilliant 176 put them in a commanding position with 59 to spare. He completed his first ODI double century and passed 5,000 Test runs for New Zealand.
But chaos struck in the South African innings as a mix-up between Williamson and de Bruyn led to a run out and a flurry of wickets. Jeetan Patel removed Amla for a single and Mitchell Santner claimed the scalp of opener Edward Moore in the next over. Southee called time on New Zealand’s innings after 179-4, leaving them 466 behind. Zubayr Hamza and Raynard van Tonder shared an unbroken 57-run stand to give the Proteas some chance, but they were both out shortly after lunch.
CSA was criticised for sending a second-string squad to New Zealand because it clashed with the T20 Global League, which it deems as more important than Test cricket. The selectors’ decision was defended by Shukri Conrad, who said the players selected “represent the Proteas badge with honour” and “have earned the right to be there”. The two-match series finishes in Wellington on Saturday.
Tests
The Proteas have a second-string squad for the two-Test series against New Zealand, and that has raised concerns over the quality of the side and their ability to handle the pressure at Seddon Park. Cricket South Africa (CSA) says it was forced to choose the second-string side because the two Tests clashed with a T20 franchise competition that it needs to boost its finances.
The move has been criticised by former Australia captain Steve Waugh, who has said it shows CSA lacks respect for the game in New Zealand.
The Black Caps took a big lead in the third Test at Seddon Park and were able to consolidate that advantage despite a chaotic start to South Africa’s innings. Kane Williamson’s superb 176 put his side in a strong position and ensured that the home team remained in control at stumps on day four, leading by 175 runs.
Williamson made his maiden Test century in the first innings as New Zealand posted 511 batting first, with Rachin Ravindra making 240 and Williamson scoring 118. The hosts decided against enforcing the follow-on and stayed in complete control of the match.
South Africa began their reply with a slow start, and were in trouble at 26-2 when opener Edward Moore was caught behind off Matt Henry’s bowling. But Zubayr Hamza and Raynard van Tonder rescued the innings with a stand of 59 for the third wicket, extending the partnership to 104 minutes before lunch.
The Proteas were then rocked back by Colin de Grandhomme, who claimed a stunning catch to dismiss Dean Elgar and another catch to remove Hashim Amla.

The Proteas were in danger of allowing New Zealand to pull off the remarkable feat of winning two Test matches in South Africa after a self-inflicted collapse on Tuesday. The Proteas were 314-8 at lunch with the Black Caps having forged an unassailable lead of 528 runs.
However, an impressive comeback from the Proteas saw them take control again. Zubayr Hamza and Raynard van Tonder put on a 104-minute partnership to keep the scoreboard ticking over. However, the pair were soon parted by a superb delivery from Matt Henry, who induced an edge off the bat of Brand as he drove on the up at the ball, which grazed his back pad to land in Devon Conway’s hands at short third man.
Hamza then fell lbw in the next over to a ball that swung late from Mitchell Santner and was edged into the leg-side by Hamza. Southee reviewed the decision after initially giving the wicket and he was right to do so as the replay showed that the ball swung on the up, taking the batsman’s off stump with it.
In the other innings, Kane Williamson made another century to reaffirm his position as one of the world’s top batsmen. Rachin Ravindra was also on the mark as the Black Caps piled up 561 all out in their first innings.
South Africa will be aiming to avoid an embarrassing whitewash against the Black Caps at Seddon Park, but they will have to produce something special to do that. The Proteas picked a second-string side for the series, with only Ryan Rickelton, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder returning from the team that lost to the Black Caps in an ODI at this same venue last month.
The South Africa National Cricket Team Vs New Zealand National Cricket Team Match Scorecard highlights the teams’ performances and match situation. South Africa are in a commanding position with 185 to chase in the final over of the match, with the backing of the Gaddafi Stadium crowd. However, the Proteas need to avoid a collapse like the one they suffered on Monday and play their best cricket to win the game.
